Coral Desk with Upholstered Stool

Here's my latest project.  If you follow me on Facebook then you saw a sneak peak of this desk the other day.  The Facebook photo definitely read more as Red than the true color which is more Coral.  It's called Terracotta Rose from Martha Stewart's line. At any rate it's a bold color and I love it.  

Well now I love it but before it was distressed and dark waxed I wasn't so sure.   It is often that way with me.  The body of the desk was white before with just a few scratches and chips so I had a good base to start with.  

 

I decided to sand the top because it had some chips that would show through the top coat and after sanding for awhile I liked it.  Not everyone will like this finish but that's okay. 

My sister gave me the stool it fits perfect inside the desk opening.  For the upholstery I used tape to mask off the lines and painted with the same paint I used on the body.   Once that was dry I printed a design from the Graphics Fairy onto wax paper and then transferred it onto the fabric by rubbing the image with the end of a craft brush.  I have done this before with varied success so this time I dampened the fabric to see if that would help.  I think it did.

I added some foam and batting to the stool then stapled my fabric to the underside.  The fabric is drop cloth so I used the finished edge for the ruffle.  No sewing.  I just stapled the fabric pleating it as I went.

To get a nice crisp edge I made my own upholstery tack strip like I did here.  Yep I used a good old beer box again.  A little tacky yes but I prefer to call it resourceful.   It's the perfect thickness.  I cut a circle the size of the stool about 1/2" wide. It just gives the fabric a nice edge to hang over.
